En particular, algunas personas creen que podr\u00edan estar afectando la biodiversidad, los flujos de agua y la calidad del suelo. Sin embargo, seg\u00fan Cossalter (2003), en la mayor\u00eda de los casos este razonamiento suele ser equivocado y los problemas suelen estar relacionados con plantaciones espec\u00edficas y un proceso de planificaci\u00f3n y ejecuci\u00f3n deficiente.<br><br>En cuanto a la biodiversidad, la direcci\u00f3n del impacto est\u00e1 en funci\u00f3n del tipo de ecosistema que reemplaza. Si en el proceso se reemplazan los bosques naturales, el efecto sobre la biodiversidad ser\u00e1 negativo. Sin embargo, si las plantaciones se establecen en tierras degradadas, el efecto ser\u00e1 positivo y <strong>sostenibilidad del medio ambiente<\/strong> se lograr\u00e1.<br><br>La relaci\u00f3n con los flujos de agua requiere una comprensi\u00f3n m\u00e1s dif\u00edcil. Generalmente se llegan a conclusiones y generalizaciones err\u00f3neas, incluso en la literatura formal. Por ejemplo, es necesario analizar cada plantaci\u00f3n por separado, ya que diferentes variables interact\u00faan entre s\u00ed para definir la direcci\u00f3n y magnitud del impacto en los flujos de agua. Algunos ejemplos de estas variables son: el tipo de suelo y su capacidad de absorber agua, las especies utilizadas, el tipo de h\u00e1bitat reemplazado por la plantaci\u00f3n, las condiciones clim\u00e1ticas de la regi\u00f3n y el nivel de precipitaci\u00f3n en la zona.<br><br>Finalmente, el efecto sobre los suelos suele estar correlacionado con la edad de rotaci\u00f3n de los bosques. Por un lado, la erosi\u00f3n tiende a intensificarse en las primeras etapas de las plantaciones. Durante este per\u00edodo la preparaci\u00f3n de la tierra tiende a dejar las plantaciones expuestas a las condiciones ambientales; En casos de rotaciones muy cortas, es posible que no tengan tiempo suficiente para estabilizar completamente sus niveles de erosi\u00f3n. Sin embargo, nuevamente, la magnitud y direcci\u00f3n del impacto en la calidad del suelo se correlaciona con las caracter\u00edsticas espec\u00edficas de cada plantaci\u00f3n. Cabe se\u00f1alar que la mayor\u00eda de las plantaciones comerciales tienden a afectar negativamente la calidad del suelo en menor medida que muchos de los cultivos agr\u00edcolas tradicionales.
